Tabs in Firefox 2.0

Restoring V1.x tab handling

One of the “enhancements” in Version 2.0 of Mozilla Firefox is the close-button on each and every tab that is open. While this makes it easy to close a specific tab, it makes it very difficult and slow to close many tabs in a row.

In V1.x, the close-button used to be at the right edge of the window, and to close 5 tabs, all you had to do is aim once and click five times. Now, since the size of the tabs is changing, you need to aim five times and click five times.

Here is a way to restore the old functionality:

  1. Open Firefox, and go to the URL about:config
  2. Scroll down to the entry: browser.tabs.closeButtons (or use the filter on “Buttons”)
  3. Edit the value to be “3”
  4. Enjoy!

There is detailed information about this configuration-item available at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.tabs.closeButtons
