Dear Members of the LinuxBasics.org Community,
LinuxBasics.org has set out with the goal of helping people to get Linux installed, configured and running. In 2004 when we began, Linux was more difficult to tame, and thus a thorough understanding of the underlying principles was necessary to connect to the network and the internet, or to use the soundcard or even X11.
Today, at the beginning of 2009, all of these things have become so easy. There is a large variety of Linux distributions which make it easy to solve any of the problems one would have encountered 5 years ago. We are glad that our favorite OS has come such a long way, and that today it is easier to install a Linux-workstation than it is to install a Windows-workstation.
The downside of this development is that traffic on the LBo-site has become less and less. We have found LinuxBasics.org to be obsolete and feel it is time to close down our work on the site.
Here is how we plan to proceed:
We will preserve most of the content of the site, including what is on the Blog and any gems that are lurking in the Forum. The Blog and Forum themselves will be removed in the near future to minimize vulnerabilities which would come along with unmaintained installations. The IRC channel is not running on our server, so it will stay available for chat. Those who meet there plan to continue our Sunday chats in order to keep the good contacts and friendships that came to be. We’ll also keep our contact information on the site, so we can stay in touch.
The LBook for the Basic Course will still be available, though we are going to recommend that folks who stumble upon a link to our course will be better off going to the
current version of Machtelt Garrels’ Introduction to Linux: A Hands on Guide, the book we used to create LBook. LBook will not receive further updates.
For those who have linux questions, great forums can be found at
LinuxQuestions.org,
HowToForge.org and
UbuntuForums.org. These sites are vibrant communities where more people read your questions, and thus the chance of getting the answer you need if much higher than it has been here. A search on your distro’s name will no doubt turn up other forums similar to that of Ubuntu.
It has been a joy to serve the Linux community under the LBo banner and a bit sad for us that its usefulness has ended. There have been one or two people of late with questions and a few starting the course, but there just isn’t enough business for LBo any longer. We won’t be far away. Writing to the address on the contact page of the wiki should get our attention. Or, by all means, drop by the IRC chat sometime, especially during the weekly chat on Sundays at 20:00 UTC.
It has been a wonderful project, and we have come to meet wonderful people (=you) through it. But the time has come to dim the lights and start to put up the chairs on the tables.
Thank you very much,
Anita, Jisao, Sam and Stefan
